Reframing the Monsters Outside: Mavericks, Rebels and Rule Breakers in Cult Film
18th - 23rd October 2022
Hybrid event: physical and virtual guests and screenings and accompanying virtual conference - presented by Birmingham City University, MAC Birmingham, The Electric Cinema and The Mockingbird Cinema.
For its 16th annual edition, Cine Excess reviews cult cinema’s mavericks, rebels and rulebreakers, assessing those film figures, practices and traditions that have been so central to debates in this field. The event will look back over cinema’s established mavericks as well as considering contemporary outsiders within the terrain of cult film.
Additionally, the concept of the cinematic outsider also incorporates important considerations of race, gender, sexuality and disability within cult film representations. These issues will be discussed by visiting international filmmakers attending Cine-Excess 16.

Reframing The Monsters Outside: The Cine-Excess 16 Conference
Running throughout the daytime slots of Cine-Excess 16 is the three-day online conference Reframing the Monsters Outside: Mavericks, Rebels and Rulebreakers in Cult Film, in which a range of international scholars and critics consider some of cult cinema’s most diverse, influential and unnerving filmmakers.
Central to these discussions of the cinematic outsider are important considerations of race, gender, sexuality and disability within cult film representations. Some of these themes will be addressed by Professor Maisha Wester (University of Sheffield) in her Cine-Excess 16 keynote address on the topic of Anti-Blackness and Relative Monstrosity, which takes place on Thursday 20th October at 12pm UK time. The Cine-Excess 16 conference is open scholars, students and members of the public. Tickets can be purchased as a Cine-Excess delegate pass which allows access to all Cine-Excess online conference events and a selection of Cine-Excess in person and streamed screenings for £75/£40 (concessions). |
Cult Mavericks on Screen: The Cine-Excess 16 Screening Season
To compliment this year’s festival theme, the Cine-Excess 16 screening season is entitled Cult Mavericks on Screen and considers a range of innovative and often unnerving new film releases that embody cult film’s continued preoccupation with cinematic rebels, rulebreakers and outsiders.
The Cine-Excess 16 screening season includes both in person UK film premieres and exclusive screenings alongside a range of streamed releases, some of which are being made available for international audiences. The Cult Mavericks on Screen screening season is open to academics, students and members of the public (aged 18 years and over). In person screenings take place at the Electric Cinema, MAC Birmingham and Mockingbird Cinema (see film descriptions for specific booking details), while online releases can be accessed via the Cine-Excess streaming platform. |
